Skinscape Magazine is a speculative editorial project that explores what tattoos could become in the future when they move beyond decoration and take on functional, expressive roles. The goal was to design and visualize future-forward tattoos and present them through an editorial portrait photoshoot, culminating in posters and ad-style visuals.

Story

Brief

Create tattoos of the future that feel grounded, believable, and culturally relevant. The tattoos should suggest added functionality or meaning beyond aesthetics, while remaining visually compelling within an editorial context.

Concept & Strategy

Rather than leaning into extreme sci‑fi aesthetics, the concept focuses on a retro‑futuristic, early‑90s grunge sensibility. The intention was to create something that feels achievable in the near future rather than speculative fantasy.

The tattoos act as symbols of identity, technology, and self‑expression, blending organic human skin with futuristic visual language.

Target Audience

  • Age Range: 18–35

  • Audience: Global

  • Fashion‑forward creatives, culture consumers, and readers interested in future aesthetics, body modification, and experimental design.

Visual Inspiration

  • Early 1990s grunge aesthetics

  • Retro‑futurism

  • Editorial fashion photography

  • Experimental body art

The visual language balances grit and polish, creating imagery that feels raw but intentional.

Process

Prototyping

Custom tattoo stencils were designed to simulate futuristic tattoo concepts. These stencils allowed for flexibility and iteration before committing to final visuals.

Application

Liquid makeup was sprayed through the stencils directly onto the models’ skin, mimicking the appearance of tattoos while allowing for control during the shoot.

Photoshoot

The tattoos were captured in an editorial portrait setting, emphasizing texture, skin, and the relationship between the body and the applied graphics.

Final Deliverables

  • Editorial‑style portrait images

  • Poster and advertisement layouts

  • Visual mockups representing real life product

The final work presents Skinscape Magazine as a forward‑thinking publication where strategy meets aesthetics, positioning tattoos as a future medium for storytelling and identity.
